FREE 1 DAY VIDEO TRAINING WORKSHOP WITH A MISSION FOCUS

SATURDAY 19th NOVEMBER 2016

9.30 – 17:00 TONBRIDGE BAPTIST CHURCH, TN10 3HZ

 OVERVIEW

WHAT THE WORKSHOP COVERS

Nigel Davey, a professional videographer, former commercial Television Director and mission worker, will provide training on:

  • Internet video viewing trends
  • Identifying your core audiences & understanding their visual and content preferences
  • The psychology of shooting an interview
  • Shot composition, favouring interviews and mission field updates
  • Basic lighting and sound recording tips
  • Story telling models that work well with video
  • How to write a Shooting Script
  • Advice on affordable royalty free music and video clip resources

The workshop is aimed at anyone connected with Mission (e.g.  field worker, support role, supporter/advocate) who wants to make effective and inspiring videos relating to Mission. Whilst the course is open to anyone, the examples and exercises are mostly Mission related.

The main ‘types’ of Mission video the training covers are: regular field worker updates, pre-recorded video Skype calls, introducing/contextualising a new field, videos covering ‘closed’ fields with related security issues.

The first part of the day covers key video theory interspersed with short group exercises. There is a longer group exercise in the afternoon drawing together all the theory.

Candidates are encouraged to bring and use their own video recording equipment, e.g. a smart phone/tablet, a stills camera/DSLR with ‘movie’ mode, a Go Pro/actioncam or a traditional camcorder.

ABOUT

ABOUT NIGEL

Hi, I’m Nigel. I became a Christian at 25 and God quickly manoeuvred me out of Insurance and into live television production.  For over a decade I held various television roles relating to camera, sound and directing. Then I was called out of secular TV and into the role of International Video Manager at OMF. I now produce videos for a variety of mission agencies and churches, including my own, Tonbridge Baptist Church.

With this background I’ve learnt to appreciate the financial and logistical challenges that mission workers, agencies and churches face when attempting to make videos. Also, having spent time on both side of the mission/church fence, I’ve experienced what is more likely to engage and motivate churches and supporters iro mission.

The workshop I’m running on the 19th of November is completely free. Normally I charge for my training courses, but on this occasion God has said do it for free. So if you think it will benefit you, please come along and (hopefully) be blessed.

To discover a bit more about me or my work/ministry please take a look around the rest of this website.

PRACTICALITIES

WORKSHOP PRACTICALITIES

  • If you would like to attend the workshop, please send your name, a contact number, your connection or interest with Mission (if applicable) and the number of people in your party to nigel@ndavey.co.uk.
  • If you are travelling from afar, it is very likely a member of Tonbridge Baptist Church can offer you a spare bedroom on the Friday night (18th). Please contact me on 07752 243046 or nigel@ndavey.co.uk to arrange this.
  • Tonbridge Baptist Church has free parking at the back. But please avoid parking in the yellow bays (reserved for local residents) on two sides of the church car park. There is also plenty of on street parking near the church.
  • Coffee, tea and biscuits will be provided during breaks. But please bring your own sandwiches/snacks for the lunch time break.
  • Although the workshop is Mission focussed, all the theory relates to standard film and television practices. So anyone is welcome to attend even if they are not specifically interested in Mission or Christianity. As a guideline a similar secular course would cost approx. £300 per person.
  • Weather allowing, we will film the main exercise (90-120 minutes) outside. So please bring appropriate outdoor clothing.
  • Please check your video recording device has sufficient battery power and recording space/media. You won’t need a laptop since there isn’t time for any editing.

 TESTIMONIALS

TESTIMONIALS FROM FORMER WORKSHOP ATTENDEES

Nigel came up to York to give us a day's training on taking video footage to produce some short films of our mission partners in Malawi.  His advice was very practical and hands-on.  We particularly appreciated the concept of the "shooting script" which I used for all four of the videos.  Thanks again, Nigel!

Richard Brassington

Administrator for Zambesi Mission

We really enjoyed the training Nigel gave us in how to put together a short video. It was very practical and inspiring. I would certainly recommend Nigel’s video training courses to anyone.

The leadership of ReachAcross, an international mission agency, realised there would be great benefit in training senior Field Leaders and National Directors in how to film and produce short, good-quality video content to promote various aspects of the charity's work overseas and in the UK.  The problem, or so we thought, was that we could only give one day for training, tagged on to our normal annual business meetings.  However, under Nigel's professional guidance and easy manner, we learned not only how to film, edit and produce videos, but were able to immediately put theory into practice during the training with some very pleasing results.  By the end, everyone had more confidence and know-how, and I would wholeheartedly recommend Nigel as a very competent trainer.

Our video team at Elim Yeovil has for a number of years just been one or two people. When the opportunity arose to have Nigel come and run a training day at our church we jumped at the chance. We had a large group attend for the session and every single person left with a new found passion and far increased knowledge of how to produce videos, right from the basics. The course was approachable for those with no prior knowledge, and also still interesting and challenging enough for the one or two people in attendance who had some previous experience. Nigel’s enthusiasm was infectious, and since the date of the training we have now started a video team of around 8 volunteers. This is a great start and I see this as only the beginning. We can’t thank you enough, Nigel!

YouTube, Facebook, Instagram bombard us with videos almost daily. It has become the medium of choice for almost every teenager with a smart phone. In addition nearly all modern DSLR cameras have the ability to shoot video at a higher quality than was considered broadcast standard only ten years ago. What is missing is the expertise to use the technology well; to make your video stand out from the noise. Nigel has that expertise and spent the day with us passing on some key principles of video production to our team of enthusiastic amateurs. The results were instantly noticeable, better framing, better lighting, better sound and importantly, some insights into how to interview, plan and construct a video so that it puts the message first - how to tell our story. Following the day with Nigel we have been inspired, as well as being given some key production principles to work with. We're not over-night experts but our ability to communicate the message via the medium of video has been noticeably improved and we're keen to learn more.

I had been making videos here and there, but the course showed me the basics that I've always missed: the planning, the shooting, interviewing skills, etc. It set me up to make effective videos with a clear message. It also gave me the hands-on experience that I needed. I believe my supporters are benefitting because I attended the training and use what I learnt.

The course really helped me to understand the flow of video production. As a beginner I could quickly gain insights into the crucial areas of pre-production, production and post-production. Getting insights from a professional it also left me with a desire to learn more in the future. One of the outcomes was that I could organize a similar workshop here in Japan that equipped a number of colleagues to better tell stories by video.
